Environmental Education

Meadowbank School is a Green-Gold Enviro School. The children have heaps of great Environmental Education learning opportunities.

In Year 2 this year, we are focusing our learning around the Junior Orchard. In Term 1 we will begin the year by exploring the orchard and finding out what grows in it. We will learn all about plants and how to be responsible for them. In Term 2 we will learn about the importance of pollination in an orchard and find out what changes happen to plants and plant products from the orchard. Later on in Term 3 we will learn about communication and create signage for the orchard to teach visitors about the different plant and animal species that live there. In Term 4 we will evaluate our orchard and create structures to improve it.

This is what we have done in Room 21:

Term 1

We defined Plants as part of our Responsibility topic.

We adopted some class goldfish and we take turns to feed them. Their tank has lots of plants growing in it to make a good habitat for them. We used their fish tank water in some of our seed growing experiments.

Each of us took responsibility for our own marigold seed.

They are growing really well.

We designed our own bean experiments with a buddy and wrote about them.

Some of the beans didn't grow, but some did!

We visited one of the school swan plants and brainstormed all the things we could see, feel, hear and smell. We came up with lots of great ideas which we used in our writing.

Mrs Elmore taught us about taking cuttings from grown plants. We went into the junior orchard and made some cuttings to take back to class. They are growing really well so far!

Term 2

We defined pollination as part of our Change topic.

During Art we looked at lots of different examples of butterflies and sketched our own butterfly designs. We turned these into printing blocks and printed them.
