This term we are doing Philosophy for Children as part of our Oral Language program. We are learning to take turns speaking and to agree or disagree with other people's ideas.
This week the topic we discussed was:
"We should chop down our junior orchard to build a cool new playground."
Here are our thoughts...
Sophie: I disagree because our junior orchard is very special because we're going to plant some marigolds in there.
Bethany: I agree with Sophie because our junior orchard is the home for the worms
Molly: I agree with Sophie because the junior orchard is special because it's native. It's not very good to nature to chop trees.
Tyler: It is our responsibility to take care of the junior orchard. It's the worms' home. It keeps us alive 'cause it has oxygen.
Nina: I agree with Sophie because the orchard is a special place. The worms make soil so we can make more flowers.
Caroline: I agree with Sophie because it's part of nature.
Louella: I agree with Sophie because if we chop it down some worms might get chopped in half and die.
Miss Cockcroft: We need more playground space because we have lots more children at our school now.
Rowan: I disagree with Miss Cockcroft 'cause without the orchard we'd have nowhere to put the worm scraps.
Mitchell: I agree with Sophie because if the orchard wasn't there we would all die. The worm farms give us oxygen and so does the orchard.
Olivia: I disagree with Miss Cockcroft because if the orchard was cut down there would still because there would still be soil. And because trees help us to breathe. If there were no trees it would all turn into a desert.
John: I agree with Olivia because if the trees weren't here nobody would be on Earth.
Lucy: I disagree with Miss Cockcroft because if we had a playground in the orchard there would be no sun in the classrooms along here.
Bhawnvir: I agree with Miss Cockcroft because if we don't cut the orchard down we won't have enough places to play.
Hazel: I disagree with Miss Cockcroft because the orchard is special and the worms and plants would die.
